Aldon Smith and Colin Kaepernick reportedly got in an on-field fight the day before Smith’s arrest and being cut by the San Francisco 49ers.
Aldon Smith has had about as bad of a day imaginable on Friday. Early Friday morning he was arrested on hit and run, DUI, and vandalism charges. As a result of the arrest and past issues regarding his off the field behavior, Friday morning’s arrest led to him being cut by the San Francisco 49ers.
It now appears that things started to go downhill for Smith on Thursday. TMZ is reporting that, during practice on Thursday, Smith and 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick got involved in a physical altercation on the field. The fight was apparently intense enough that other 49ers players had to pull Smith and Kaepernick apart.
What led to the fight is currently unknown, as is whether or not there was any kind of verbal altercation that escalated the situation to physical blows. However, TMZ did speculate that Kaepernick’s rumored relationship with Smith’s ex girlfriend may have been a factor in the fight.
Focusing entirely on Smith, one has to wonder if the fight with Kaepernick at 49ers practice on Thursday had anything to do with the events that ultimately led to his arrest early on Friday morning. For a player and man that had past issues with addiction, something like that could be looked at as a possible trigger. The possibility that Smith’s ex-girlfriend was somehow a factor is interesting in that regard as well.
We’ll surely find out more about the events leading up to Smith’s arrest and possibly even the altercation with Kaepernick in the coming days. That being said, this may be the end of Smith in the NFL after being let go by San Francisco. With his struggles off the field, though, the gridiron may be the least of his concerns as he tries to get things in his life on the right track.
