With Geno Smith out for the next 6-10 weeks after breaking his jaw, the team must now lean on his backup — but who is it?

Next: Who Broke Geno Smith's Jaw?

It hasn’t been easy to be associated with the New York Jets, in fact it’s both physically and emotionally painful. Emotionally, fans have been finding it hard to care about the team over the years as they’ve sunk deeper and deeper into the hole they’ve dug themselves over the years. Physically, we learned today it’s painful for players to co-exist without wanting to break someone’s face.

On Tuesday, the Jets learned that Geno Smith would miss the next 6-10 weeks after a locker room altercation left him with a broken jaw following a sucker punch from a teammate.

The stories about who started the fight and just how much of a sucker punch it was vary from person to person, but what is definite is that Smith is going to miss a significant portion of this upcoming season. That means the Jets are going to need to rely on their backup to get them through whatever kind of season this is going to end up being.

So just who is the Jets backup quarterback?

The depth charts, which were ironically released just hours before Smith broke his face, stated that Ryan Fitzpatrick is the backup quarterback with rookie Bryce Petty behind him ready to grow behind him. The thinking was that Fitzpatrick might be the guy to get Geno Smith straight while also teaching Bryce Petty, but it’s a three headed monster that has been reduced to a dynamic duo.

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise, as it wouldn’t be the first time that a starting quarterback lost his job to a young stud after getting injured. Bryce Petty may not be Tom Brady, but the Jets have needed to find a franchise quarterback — and at the very least Bryce Petty still has his jaw intact.
