D’Angelo Russell tweets Tracy McGrady might be the GOAT
The Los Angeles Lakers picked former Ohio State Buckeyes point guard D’Angelo Russell with the second-overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Russell is going to be the face of the franchise once shooting guard Kobe Bryant finally decides to hang up the sneakers. Hopefully, by that point, Russell is done with tweets like this:
This is a hot/interesting/absurd take. Tracy McGrady is certainly one of the best scorers to ever step on a basketball court. McGrady came into the league straight out of high school and alongside Vince Carter, made the Toronto Raptors worth watching. McGrady was named to the All-Star game seven times while making first-team All-Pro twice. McGrady was also a three-time second-team All-Pro and twice a third-team All-Pro. In addition, he was the NBA’s scoring champion twice.

When all was set and done, McGrady averaged 19.6 points per game with 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists. He is without a doubt going to be in the Hall of Fame, but the greatest of all time? McGrady never went to the NBA Finals, and for that matter never even made it to the conference finals. He was a mediocre defensive player and was not a great passer. The scoring was amazing. The rest of his game? Eh.
It’s pretty safe to say McGrady is nowhere near one of the top 25 NBA players in history. In fact, McGrady does not even sniff the top 10 guards in league history.
Russell is really going for broke with this take. At least he had enough guts to publicly acknowledge his opinion, which is likely to draw plenty of heat.
