6. Fran Tarkenton

Former Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants quarterback Fran Tarkenton was ahead of his time. While scrambling quarterbacks, like Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson, are part of the modern NFL and even more common in the college football game today, Tarkenton was doing it decades earlier.

And he was successful at it as well, earning Pro Bowl honors nine different times as well as two All-Pro honors. Tarkenton was also named the 1975 MVP. He finished his career with 47,003 yards passing and 342 touchdowns, marks that rank eighth and sixth on the all-time list.

When Tarkenton retired he held numerous NFL career records, including: pass attempts, completions, yardage, and touchdowns. He also held the records for rushing yards by a quarterback and wins by a starting quarterback. He rushed for touchdowns in 15 different seasons, an NFL record, and currently sits fourth on the NFL all-time list for rushing yards by a quarterback.

Tarkenton came close to winning the Super Bowl, reaching the game three different times over a span of four seasons (1973, 1974, 1976). While Tarkenton didn’t win the Super Bowl, he did win six different NFL playoff games.

Unfortunately Tarkenton and the Vikings were never able to win the Super Bowl.
