One waiver trade deadline deal every MLB team should make
Not known as big spenders, the Kansas City Royals have made it known that they are willing to pick up salary in trades in order to take their best shot at a World Series title in 2015. Of course, they don’t want to be saddled with contracts in 2016, which is why acquiring starter Johnny Cueto and super utility man Ben Zobrist (both of whom will be free agents this winter) made so much sense in July.
Despite picking up Cueto prior to the non-waiver trade deadline, the Royals could use more starting pitching and San Diego righty Ian Kennedy is one of the best available options. In 21 starts with the Padres this season, Kennedy is 7-10 with a 4.37 ERA in 21 starts. He has 105 strikeouts and 36 walks in 115.1 innings thus far. The 30-year old right-hander will be a free agent at season’s end, which means the Royals won’t have to worry about any additional money in 2016. Another option for the Royals may be a backup middle infielder/utility man.
