One waiver trade deadline deal every MLB team should make
Speaking of the Pirates, aside from some rotation depth, Pittsburgh in pretty good shape heading into the final six weeks of the season. They won’t catch the St. Louis Cardinals for the NL Central division title, but the Bucs are a near lock to play in the Wild Card game. So what do they need to add to the roster in order to have the best chance to win a one-game playoff?
Believe it or not, a defensive first baseman.
Sure, the Pirates could use a backup outfielder in case something happened to Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte or Gregory Polanco, but Pittsburgh did add Michael Morse prior to the non-waiver trade deadline and Travis Ishikawa and Sean Rodriguez can fill in in a pinch.
All three can also step in as a defensive replacement for horrific defensive first baseman Pedro Alvarez as well, but to be safe, adding someone like Adam LaRoche might make manager Clint Hurdle breathe a little easier in the late innings.
