Pauer Surge: Pau Gasol leads Spain to big EuroBasket win
Pau Gasol has long been one of the most dominant players in international play. Fellow EuroBasket players have had nightmares about how to guard the big Spaniard every time he steps on the court. Today, he once again proved that his dominance, even at age 35, is far from over.
Gasol poured in 30 points in a win over Poland that again saw Spain in danger of losing. Although Spain pulled away late, the game was tied after three quarters, and Spain would’ve been in big trouble without Gasol.
The most impressive part of his day was going six of seven (!!) behind the three-point line. For a player not know to shoot threes, that is an absurd statline. Heck, Stephen Curry would be happy with those numbers.
Gasol shot 46.2 percent on his 26 threes during the NBA season, but they were all from the corner. In this game, he was pulling up from the top of the key. It was remarkable watching an older player extend his range like that.
There have been a lot of questions about how Gasol will fit in a Fred Hoiberg offense. If he can shoot threes from more places than the corner this year, that answers a lot of those questions.
