The Houston Texans are playing host to the Kansas City Chiefs in the opening game of the season. The Chiefs aren’t necessarily thrilled with the condition of the field, and quite frankly it looks horrible.

Part of the issue is that the Texans’ use a system of removable trays of grass for NFL games. For other games, they use a turf surface that sits underneath the grass trays.

The Texans could use that same turf field, which Texas A&M and Arizona State played on a week ago, but for some reason they won’t.

With the scrutiny of field conditions around the country, being blamed for injuries of Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III at FedEx Field and possibly Jadeveon Clowney of the Texans at NRG Stadium last season.

“He told me on the field when it happened, he was just like, ‘Bro, I just jumped, came down and hit one of the holes on the field,’ ” safety D.J. Swearinger recalled after Clowney’s injury. “There are a few holes in the grass, so he said he thought he stepped on one of those holes and got hurt. So I told him to try and walk it off, see if he could go. He went in the next play and couldn’t go, so I told him to go to the sideline and see what’s up with it. And he went over to the sideline, and I guess that’s when they told him (he had to stay out).”

Surely the Texans have to be worried about their players’ safety and will evaluate it at this point. You can’t have your No. 1 draft pick and potentially other players being injured because of lousy field conditions.

You’re an NFL franchise who just built an expensive and ridiculously large video board.
