The Pittsburgh Pirates‘ season has been dealt a huge blow after losing shortstop Jung Ho Kang to a serious leg injury for the year.

The Pittsburgh Pirates chances at a World Series have taken a hit before they can even play a postseason game. According to reports, dynamic rookie shortstop Jung Ho Kang will be out for the rest of the season after he suffered a torn MCL, torn meniscus and a fractured tibial plateau.

The injury came as a result of when Kang was taken out on a slide by the Cubs‘ Chris Coghlan, who was trying to break up a double play.

Kang’s agent said after the game that he didn’t believe it was a dirty play and that Coghlan played it the way it should be played on the field.

Kang went down immediately on the play and it was clear right away watching the play that Kang’s leg bent in a way that it shouldn’t have.

In case anyone is wondering just how big of an impact that the shortstop has on the Pirates when he plays, the team is 23 games over .500 with him in the lineup, as compared to just five games over without him in it.

The 28-year-old is playing his first season in the majors after coming over from Korea. He’s been a big addition to the Pirates as they aim for a World Series this season. The team still boasts a talented roster that can compete, but without Jung Ho Kang, the team just doesn’t perform as well statistically and the record reflects that when he doesn’t play.

The playoffs are almost here for the Pirates and this is the last thing that they needed.
