By Jason Evans
10. Dwight Gooden 1985
24 wins
1.54 ERA
Unanimous Winner Of Award
In the mid 1980’s, the Mets were kings of New York and Dwight Gooden was the forefront of it. Gooden was the Mets first round pick in 1982 and came up just two years later won the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 1984. He was the Mets best pitcher since Tom Seaver and Dr. K put up one of the best pitching clinics of all-time in 1985.
Gooden won 24 games, completed 16 of them, had an ERA of 1.54, had eight shutouts and struck out 268 batters. He had a FIP of 2.13 and WHIP of 0.95. Even though they didn’t have WAR back then, he had one of 13.3 which was five wins higher than John Tudor who was second.
In the post deadball era, only Bob Gibson in 1968 had a lower ERA for a season than Gooden in 1985. Â From June 4th through the rest of the season he lost one time. One.
Gooden’s ERA never went above 2.00 again after his first start. He was that dominant.
This would be the only Cy Young Award he would win. Drugs and injuries were his downfall, but his 1985 season will always be remembered as one of the best seasons of all time.
