Reports indicate that Tristan Thompson will be signing a three-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ offseason can’t be qualified as anything but a success. The organization was able to keep LeBron James, Kevin Love, and even J.R. Smith in Cleveland while also managing to retain assets like Matthew Dellavedova and Timofey Mozgov and ultimately keeping the core of the team that took them to the NBA Finals last season in tact. The only remaining loose end had been power forward Tristan Thompson.

Thompson had expressed a desire to play with the Cavaliers, but also the desire for a max contract. The two sides had been locked in negotiations over how much money Thompson would get on a new deal and over how long the deal would be. Thompson remained steadfast for quite some time, but he’s seemingly been broken now. According to ESPN’s Chris Broussard, Thompson’s agent has told him to sign a three-year, $53 million deal with the Cavs:

This is huge for the Cavs as they maintain a little more financial flexibility than they would have signing Thompson to a max-deal considering the other money that they’ve handed out. Moreover, they get to bring back a young player who was huge for them in the run to the Finals. Thompson signing this new deal only further confirms that the Cavs will in the thick of things atop the Eastern Conference once again this season.
