Every once in a rare while, you know you are seeing a piece of history the second it happens. There was the David Tyree “Helmet Catch.” There was the Malcolm Butler interception in the Super Bowl last year.

However, those moments pale in comparison to what took place on Monday Night Football between the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers. Kansas City was trailing 31-7 in the third quarter, doing its best to resemble a five-alarm dumpster fire, when Jeremy Maclin broke free from coverage at the goal line.

Alex Smith, who is playing like he has money on the Packers, spotted Maclin and released the ball, knowing the world could never be the same if the ball was caught. Maclin trembled in anticipation, but reached for the pigskin and brought it into his shaking body. Touchdown.

For the first time since Dec. 2013, the Chiefs had thrown a touchdown to a wide receiver, breaking a streak more impressive than Joe DiMaggio hitting safely in 56 straight games. Maclin ran off to the sideline with tears in his eyes, while general manager John Dorsey pumped his fists and exalted in triumph. Without question, the $55 million contract has been rewarded.

The Chiefs may have lost the battle, but they won the war. In a race against immortality, Kansas City was able to stave off the perception that it can’t throw to a wide receiver in the painted area.

Everything we have ever known is a lie.
