Ed Hochuli and Cam Newton controversy thickens
By Bryan Arnott
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and NFL referee Ed Hochuli find themselves in the midst of a classic ‘he said, he said’ controversy.
Cam Newton addressed the press on Sunday after a 27-22 win over the Saints and claimed that Ed Hochuli said that he was, “too young” to receive a personal foul call.
The NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino appeared on NFL network and backed Hochuli on the stance that he did not say that to Newton.
"“I certainly wasn’t there, but I’ve spoken with Ed,” Blandino said. “Ed was adamant that he did not say that. He told me that he said that ‘the difference is you were running.’ I think when you look at the tape it does look like Ed did say that, I think at one point. You can’t see everything that Ed says, but he’s adamant he didn’t say it and I think that’s where we are right now and we’re just going to kind of move on from there.”"
Newton was visibly shaken after his conversation with Hochuli.
Newton stops completely in his tracks after Hochuli abruptly ends the conversation with a few words. It’s rare to see a player taken out of the moment of the game in a fashion like this.
As of now there is no news that there were microphones near the conversation that could have picked it up. Blandino’s support is unwavering that his referee did nothing wrong in this instance.
With this controversy being picked up by national media with an intensity not seen since Deflategate, it will be interesting to see what happens when the truth comes out.
