Fantasy Football: Waiver Wire Week 5

More from Fantasy

We are going to take a quick look at some player who are available in more than 50% of ESPN.com fantasy football leagues. There are many different reasons to pick up and make sure you keep your roster full of players like this. Some of these players you will want to pick up and they could be useful in a match-up type of situation. Some of these guys are players you will want to pick up and hang on to them to see of they become the next breakout player. Chances are this year’s Odell Beckham Jr. is still out there floating around on every league’s waiver wire. The most active player in your league is going to be the guy who picks up this year’s breakout stud and changes the trajectory of their fantasy football team, and your league.

We will look at all the different QBs, RBs, WRs, and TEs out there that you should pick up and add to your fantasy football team. As far as cutting a player you have to be careful there and make sure that he is not going to become a useful commodity anytime soon. Sometimes if a player is injured you can safely cut him and manage to pick him up before anyone else would if you are diligent about the matter.

More from Fantasy

Blake Bortles, Jaguars: I have been tooting Bortles horn for quite a little while now. I think he is a good talent and he seems to be getting a good grip on the Jaguars offense. He has now had three pretty decent weeks and is actually the #11 overall QB in ESPN standard leagues after four weeks of play. He is certainly worthy to be at least your backup QB so go out and pick him up if no one else in your league has.

Alex Smith, Chiefs: If I was really desperate I would add Smith. I would also consider adding him if I was in a two QB league. My guess is that Smith will have a random good game and hopefully be startable when the match-ups dictate that and otherwise I am not real interested in him.

Josh McCown, Browns: McCown has been fairly solid over the past two weeks and has tossed for over 340 yards with two touchdowns in both games. It is really hard to know exactly how he will do over the rest of the season, but he could be a decent QB2 to pickup and stash on your roster.

Jay Cutler, Bears: Cutler is another guy who seems to be playing pretty decently in a new scheme and had a decent week without Alshon Jeffery. Cutler threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns. He is worth a stash on your roster as a QB2 with some starter upside.

  • Duke Johnson Jr, Browns: Johnson seems to be getting roughly 40% of the RB touches in Cleveland and the offense seems to be gaining some confidence with McCown at the helm. Johnson just missed adding another touchdown to his already productive week four and will look to continue racking up some the fantasy points this week against the Ravens.

Darren McFadden, Cowboys: McFadden didn’t have that great of a game this past Sunday, but he figures to mix in for the future a bit more as the Cowboys have lost Lance Dunbar for the foreseeable future to an ACL injury. If you have Randle or had Dunbar, DMC seems like a no-brainer add.

Ronnie Hillman, Broncos: The Broncos offense has yet to catch full steam yet, but they are doing well with that defense and you expect the offense to pick it up at any point now. Coach Kubiak also came out this week and said that Hillman has earned some more carries so if he is floating around your waiver wire he would be my top add at RB this week.

    Wide Receivers:

Allen Hurns, Jaguars: Well it would stand to reason that since I am sold on Blake Bortles coming of age as an NFL QB I would also be sold on the guys he is throwing the ball to. Hurns had a fantastic week and while he could potentially be a one week wonder type of player I think you have to add him just based off of upside alone. If he keeps this up you could be missing out on a player who could change your fantasy football team.

Leonard Hankerson, Falcons: Hankerson had a fantastic week four and also had a fantastic week two. In each of the good weeks he caught six balls and a touchdown. I had picked him up in a few leagues after week two then cut him for the hot guy in week three. Go ahead and pick him up if you have a spot, with the way the Falcons throw the football this year he could be a solid WR3 for your fantasy team.

Tavon Austin, Rams: I know that Austin has not really lived up to the hype we all expected of him. But he has had consecutive weeks now where he has hauled in over five passes and this past week he had a breakout game of sorts with six catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns. I would add him if I had a spot to burn.

    Tight Ends:

Gary Barnidge, Browns: Barnidge has been a very effective fantasy football player the past few weeks. In each week he has hauled in 6 passes and scored a touchdown. In week three he had over 100 yards and in week four he has 75 yards. He is certainly worth an add despite if you have a starting caliber tight end. I like to add these guys sometimes just to keep other owners from landing them.

Richard Rodgers, Packers: Despite his name Rogers is not related to Aaron, but he was certainly in sync with him. He caught five of his six targets for 45 yards and scored a touchdown. In the Green Bay offense Rogers becomes a nice add as he could certainly become a regular fantasy starter in that offense.

Coby Fleener, Colts: Fleener has been in and out of the good graces of fantasy owners for the last few seasons. This past week with Matt Hasselbeck under center he found himself as the favorite target while seeing 12 targets and converting nine if them for catches with one touchdown. If Hasselbeck is to see another start, then you could use Fleener as a spot start, otherwise take a wait and see approach with the young tight end.

As always we thank you for stopping by and wish you fantasy footballers the best of luck!
