OLB. Notre Dame. Jaylon Smith. 7. player. 42. It might be crazy to say, but linebacker Jaylon Smith might be one of the more underrated players in college football, even given the fact that he plays for Notre Dame. But one thing is for sure, that being NFL scouts will instantly fall in love with his skill set and so will the San Francisco 49ers.
Prior to the 2015 season getting underway, Patrick Willis, one of the best linebackers in the league the past few seasons, decided to walk away from the game for good. Now, Smith won’t be an instant replacement, but he can eventually turn into the monster that Willis was for this defense.

In three years at Notre Dame, including this season, Smith has tallied 212 tackles with 20 of them going for loss and 1 sack. He’s physical, fast, but most importantly, he has the instincts that you just can’t teach a good linebacker. It’s cliche, but if anyone has a “nose for the ball” it’s Jaylon Smith. He’ll terrorize you when you come near him or he’ll make life a living hell for you in the backfield — pick your poison, he’s going to get you either way.

A perfect start to rebuilding this 49ers defense begins with Jaylon Smith out of Notre Dame.
