There has never been anything more confusingly bad in the NFL than this play by the Colts

The Indianapolis Colts trailed the New England Patriots late in the third quarter on Sunday Night Football and were trying to make something happen before they went into the final period. They went about trying to make something happen in the strangest, least logical way that you could possibly imagine.

On 4th-and-3, the Colts lined up in a formation that made it pretty clear that they were trying to confuse the Patriots or draw them offsides. Their entire team, save for Griff Whalencenter and Colt Anderson, were spread out wide to the right side of the field. The Pats weren’t biting, though, staying on their marks. That’s when the Colts did the unthinkable and actually snapped the ball while still in that formation. It worked like you’d imagine it would:

After the play as the offense ran to the sideline, Colts head coach had the same question everyone watching had: why in the hell did he actually snap it? Granted, Pagano isn’t always the smartest coach, but there is no way that ball was supposed to ever leave the ground by the hands of Whalen.

As if the inevitable turnover-on-downs from actually snapping the ball on that play wasn’t enough, the Patriots capitalized on the gaff by scoring a touchdown to make it 34-21 in the fourth quarter.
