You too can be the Florida Gators next placekicker

The Florida Gators are badly trying to improve their kicking game, and will consider students to fill the role.

After watching Rudy as a kid, a lot of football fans out there held the dream that they could walk on to a football field and make the team out of sheer spirit and gumption. Somehow, some way, all we needed to do was prove that our fire separated us from the pack and made up for a general lack of talent and size.

While few of us would grow up to live out that dream, there are a lucky few that will be given the chance in the near future. According to the Official Twitter account of the Florida Gators recruiting department, the team will be holding an open tryout for students who feel they can become the squad’s new placekicker.

That’s right, the minimum qualification is that you are enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Florida. Of course, you somehow also need to prove that you have the leg to get the job done at a better clip than the current crop of Gators’ kickers.

Currently, the Gators have been beaten up by their kickers. Incumbent Austin Hardin has managed to connect on just 50% of his field goal attempts this season (three of six), while freshman Jorge Powell has been slightly better by knocking two of three through the uprights.  Meanwhile, Hardin is 16-of-17 on extra points and Powell is 10-of-11 on the point after.

No doubt that this is a non-scholarship position and there are no guarantees that those trying out will make the team. However at the very least, those trying out can have an interesting story to tell their grandchildren one day.
