Canelo Alvarez will step into the ring with Gennady Golovkin, but there is a catch to making it all happen

Sure, all of us boxing fans are looking forward to November 21, which is the day that Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto will beat the daylights out of one another for Cotto’s WBC Middleweight title in Las Vegas. This is a fight that folks have been looking forward to for a while now, but the fact of the matter is that people might more be looking forward to what happens after that.

Immediately after one of these two are crowned the winner, they’ll be asked about a fight with another Middleweight champion, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. The winner only has an allotted time of 15 days to set the fight up with the undefeated knockout artist, and if they don’t, then they will be stripped of the title and it will be given to GGG.

Now, the main problem here is that Alvarez and Cotto fight at 155-pounds, while Golovkin fights at 160-pounds. In reality, to make this happen, some sort of compromise would have to be met. Well, Alvarez has his end of the compromise all figured out if he is indeed the winner on November 21.

In a recent interview with Fighthype.com, Alvarez said that he would have no problem getting into the ring with Golovkin, but only at a catchweight.

"If he wants to fight with me, let him come down to 155 and I’ll fight him whatever day he wants. At this moment, my body isn’t ready for 160 pounds. Maybe 1 or 2 more years I’ll be ready for 160, I don’t know, but I’d be delighted to fight someone like Gennady. He’s a great fighter and I think it would be a great fight. I’d be delighted to get him in a fight."

No matter what happens, this is going to be a problem that doesn’t go away. Golovkin at 160 was a problem when people whispered about a potential showdown with Floyd Mayweather and it’s going to be an issue with Alvarez or Cotto.

Still, with interest in boxing dwindling, this is something the sport cannot let slip through their fingers one way or another.
