7.Ā Brooklyn Dodgers vs. New York Yankees, 1955
1955 marked the fifthĀ time in nine yearsĀ that the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers had met in the World Series. The Yankees had won all four of the previous matchups, in addition to another two titles during this stretch.Ā After the first two games of the series, it appeared that they were on their way to yet another championship.
Brooklyn had other plans in mind, though.
The series shifted across town to Ebbets Field for Game 3, and the momentum would tilt in the Dodgersā favor as they returned home. Brooklyn won the next three games,Ā scoring 21 total runs in the process.
The Yankees won Game 6 in the Bronx in convincing fashion, forcing a deciding Game 7. Tommy Byrne took the mound for New York, and Johnny Podres did so for the Dodgers. Both playersĀ had recorded complete-game victories earlierĀ in the series, and a potential pitcherās duel was in the works.
Podres would get the best of the matchup, pitchingĀ a complete-game shutout that earned him MVP honors and carriedĀ the franchise to its first World Series victory.
It was the only World Series that the Dodgers would win in Brooklyn. The team relocated to Los Angeles two seasonsĀ later, where they would win three titles in six years from 1959 to 1965.
