24. New York Yankees vs. San Francisco Giants, 1962

1962 marked the third consecutive World Series appearance for the New York Yankees, and the first for the San Francisco Giants since relocating from New York.

Although the Yankees were the two-time reigning champions, they faced a very formidable opponent in the Giants. SanFrancisco had won 103 games that year, the most in baseball.

The series would be even throughout, with no team winning consecutive games and the losing team dominating the stat sheet and outscoring the champion.

The most memorable performance came during series final, a pitcher’s duel that ended in a 1-0 score. Ralph Terry took the mound for the Yankees for the third time in the series, and delivered a four-hit shutout. Jack Sanford had a solid outing for the Giants, but the lone run that he allowed was all that it took for New York to clinch a third consecutive World Series.

Terry was named MVP after going 2-1, pitching two complete games and posting a 1.80 ERA. The Yankees would go on to win the next two World Series, extending their streak to five. Meanwhile, San Francisco would not return to the Fall Classic for 27 years, and would not win their next title until 2010.
