Draft Picks

The Lakers had a busy draft night with three picks overall and all three of those picks were in the first 34 picks overall in the draft. However, there’s no doubt their biggest prize coming from the draft is point guard D’Angelo Russell, who was taken second overall.

PG. Ohio State Buckeyes. D’ANGELO RUSSELL. A.
D’Angelo Russell is the perfect piece for the Lakers to start moving towards a future after Kobe Bryant with. He’s tremendously skilled and bursting to the brim with potential. He may be one of the best passers of his age that has ever come into the league, but also has the ability to knock down shots from all over the floor.

Moreover, Russell has displayed a tremendous feel for the game whenever and wherever he’s playing. He understands situations and knows how to handle them appropriately when he’s on the floor. Given that, his skills, and his size as a 6’5” point guard, and this was a no-brainer for the Lakers.

Later in the first round with the 27th overall pick, the Lakers shocked everyone watching by taking Larry Nance Jr. out of Wyoming.

LARRY NANCE JR.. C-.
Not particularly caring for this move has very little to do with Nance as a talent or prospect, but more to do with the fact that he was a projected second-round talent that Los Angeles took in the first round. He may be a crazy athlete with a ton of potential and skills to build on, but there were better prospects available at pick No. 27 and they most likely could have still nabbed Nance with their final pick of the night.
. PF. Wyoming Cowboys

With their lone second-round pick and the 34th overall selection, the Lakers chose small forward Anthony Brown out of Stanford.

Stanford Cardinal. ANTHONY BROWN. B.
As most second-round picks are, Brown isn’t a sexy option for the Lakes and, if things don’t go horribly wrong, he’ll likely split time in the D-League this year and rarely break into the Lakers’ rotation. However, Brown is a deadeye shooter from long range, though he’s undoubtedly a spot-up guy who can’t create his own shot. If he’s developed properly and shows promise defensively, there’s no doubt that he could be a decent role player in L.A.
. SF
