Danny Granger did not make the Detroit Pistons opening day roster

The NBA may now finally be without the services of long-time forward and former NBA All-Star Danny Granger. Granger did not make the 15-man roster of the Detroit Pistons, as he was promptly cut by Head Coach/General Manager Stan Van Gundy late Monday morning.

Granger rose to prominence in the NBA while he was with the Indiana Pacers during their lean years after the retirement of the great shooting guard Reggie Miller. In 2009, Granger made his lone NBA All-Star Game and earned the NBA’s Most Improved Award for that season.

However, after his breakout 2008-09 NBA campaign, injuries marred Granger’s career with the Pacers, as he gradually went from face of the franchise to role player to off the team in the Frank Vogel era in Indianapolis.

Paul George’s emergence as a superstar and Vogel’s defensive-minded roster consisting of bigs like David West and Roy Hibbert left Granger out of place in Indiana. Granger was ultimately traded from the Pacers to the Los Angeles Clippers in February 2014. He played sparingly in Los Angeles before signing with the Miami Heat before the 2014-15 NBA Season.

Granger was then traded to the Phoenix Suns as part of the Goran Dragic deal in February 2015 and then went to Detroit as a part of the Marcus Morris deal. Injuries robbed Granger of his best years. At 32 years old, Danny Granger might finally be on the outside looking in at a career in the NBA.

Could he get one more opportunity? Possibly, but not making the 15-man roster of an Eastern Conference team likely missing the NBA Playoffs does not bode well for any future opportunities for Granger.
