Here are my FanDuel college football picks for October 30:
Next: Who Will Put Up Big Numbers At QB?
Oct 24, 2015; Houston, TX, USA; Rice Owls quarterback Driphus Jackson (6) attempts a pass during the second quarter against the Army Black Knights at Rice Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports
Quarterback:
Best Bet:
Driphus Jackson, Rice ($9,000): Now that the rigors of their non-conference schedule are over, Rice can settle in to the lighter Conference USA schedule. That is exactly what Jackson has done. He has not thrown an interception in October, and has gone over 250 yards twice. Now Louisiana Tech’s 112th ranked pass defense comes to town. With the Bulldog offense also being high powered, we could see a shootout which further increases Jackson’s value. He should be in for another good game on Friday night.
Honorable Mention:
Jeff Driskel, Louisiana Tech ($9,000): Rice’s pass defense is nothing to write home about either. The Owls have allowed 241 passing yards per game. The Florida transfer has thrown for more than 290 yards in his last four games, and in six of seven games this season. He has also thrown at least one touchdown in every game. He still throws an interception here and there, but the amount of yards he gets makes up for it. Expect another 290+ performance from Driskel on Friday night.
Dark Horse:
Blake Kemp, East Carolina ($7,200): Last week against a strong Temple defense, Kemp was asked to throw the ball all over the yard, and he responded with 272passing yards. Kemp will likely be called upon to do the same thing against a stout Connecticut defense. James Summers didn’t see much time last week against Temple. That will likely be the case against UConn as well. Kemp has the better arm, and could put up surprisingly good numbers against Connecticut.
My pick: Driskel
Next: Who Are The Best RB's?
Sep 10, 2015; Bowling Green, KY, USA; Louisiana Tech Bulldogs running back Kenneth Dixon (28) carries the ball away from Western Kentucky Hilltoppers defensive back Prince Charles Iworah (30) during the first half at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Joshua Lindsey-USA TODAY Sports
Running Back:
Best Bets:
Kenneth Dixon, Louisiana Tech ($9,000): For all of the problems Rice has had against the pass, they are even worse against the run. Dixon is one of those underrated backs because he plays for a smaller school, but Rice remembers him well. Dixon ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns against the Owls last year. Expect a line somewhere near that again on Friday.
Arkeel Newsome, Connecticut ($7,900): East Carolina is 75th in the nation against the run, allowing 171.8 rushing yards per game. Newsome should see plenty of holes. He is also a big part of the passing game, catching 27 passes in the last five games with at least 50 yards in all but the Cincinnati game. He is one of the most explosive players for the Huskies, so expect to see the ball in his hands a lot.
Honorable Mention:
Devante Mays, Utah State ($6,400): Mays ran for 88 yards on an impressive San Diego State run defense last week. With Wyoming coming to town with their 117th ranked run defense on Friday, expect a big game from Mays and backup LaJuan Hunt. Hunt will see enough carries to highly recommend as one of your flex options on DraftKings, but he may still be too much of a risk for your FanDuel lineup.
Brian Hill, Wyoming ($7,400): On paper, this is not a good matchup for Hill, but he managed to run for 76 yards on a stout Boise State run defense. Utah State statistically has a good run defense, but they were shredded by San Diego State’s Donnel Pumphrey last week. Hill may find some room to run in this game after all.
Dark Horse:
Brandon Radcliff, Louisville ($6,000): Radcliff has been a non-factor in the last two games against Florida State, and was actually held to negative yards against Boston College. Wake Forest has a sound defense statistically, but has struggled some against the run. The Deacons have allowed an average of 172.5 rushing yards on the ground to opposing teams. Lamar Jackson will carve off a big chunk of those rushing yards, but Radcliff could have a nice game as well.
My picks: Dixon and Mays
Next: Is WR A Crapshoot On Friday?
Oct 10, 2015; San Antonio, TX, USA; Louisiana Tech Bulldogs wide receiver Trent Taylor (5) runs after a catch against the UTSA Roadrunners during the first half at Alamodome. Mandatory Credit: Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports
Wide Receiver:
Best Bets:
Trent Taylor, Louisiana Tech ($7,700): Taylor has not been held under 75 receiving yards in any game this year. The Bulldogs are a passing team, and Taylor is the favorite target of Jeff Driskel. That makes him a consistently good option in every game.
Jake Maulhardt, Wyoming ($6,900): With the team’s top wideout Tanner Gentry doubtful for Friday’s game, expect to see an increased number of targets for Maulhardt. He has caught at least five passes in three straight games, reaching at least 50 receiving yards in all of those and scoring four touchdowns. He was producing even with Gentry in the lineup. Now we will see whether Maulhardt can handle being number one against a solid Utah State defense.
Honorable Mention:
Isaiah Jones, East Carolina ($7,000): With the Pirates going to more of a passing attack against a good Temple defense, it increased the value of Jones. He hauled in ten catches for 106 yards, but was held out of the end zone. Still, it is not out of the question to expect another double digit catch day for Jones with ECU airing it out again.
Zach Wright, Rice ($6,000): Wright has caught 14 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns over his last two games. Expect Rice to be throwing quite a bit again on Friday, and expect Wright to be on the end of a lot of those Driphus Jackson passes. I am not opposed to stacking both Wright and Temi Alaka in DraftKings, or using just Alaka if you come up $100 short in FanDuel. He doesn’t quite get the targets that Wright does, but you can argue that he does more with them.
Dark Horses:
Trevon Brown, East Carolina ($5,000): Where else can you find a receiver that has caught at least four passes per game for $5,000? He is the second fiddle to Isaiah Jones, but he is still a big part of the ECU offense, and they aren’t going to stop throwing anytime soon.
Noel Thomas, Connecticut ($5,500): Thomas has emerged as the top target for Connecticut and quarterback Bryant Shirrefs. This is not the anemic offense that we saw at Missouri back in late September. The Huskies use a balanced passing attack to move the ball now, and Thomas is right at the center of it.
My picks: Maulhardt, Thomas, and Brown
Next: Can You Save Money At TE?
Sep 13, 2014; East Hartford, CT, USA; Connecticut Huskies tight end Alec Bloom (86) makes the touchdown catch against the Boise State Broncos during the second quarter at Rentschler Field. Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports
Tight End:
Best Bet:
Jacob Hollister, Wyoming ($3,000): Hollister will undoubtedly see more targets with Tanner Gentry out. He caught three passes after Gentry was hurt last week. It is not out of the question to see him get at least five catches in this one.
Honorable Mention:
Alec Bloom, Connecticut ($3,000): Bloom has nine catches over the last two games for 164 yards. He hasn’t found the end zone yet, but these kind of targets and production at this price is very hard to pass up.
Dark Horse:
Wyatt Houston, Utah State ($2,400): Yes, I know, I picked Houston last week and he was shut out. It happens. But my reasoning was sound then, and it is again now. Houston had at least two catches in five straight games before last week.
My pick: Bloom
