Indiana Pacers: Reggie Miller’s eight points in nine seconds

The rivalry between Indiana Pacers star Reggie Miller and Knicks superfan Spike Lee began to surface around 1994 with the two continually jawing at one another when the Pacers were in Madison Square Garden. However, it was in the postseason the next year when Miller got the unquestioned last laugh.

In Game 1 of the second round of the 1995 NBA playoffs, Miller did the absolutely unheard of. The Pacers were down by six with a mere 8.9 seconds left on the clock. That was apparently more than enough time for Miller to go absolutely bananas by scoring eight points in nine seconds (the 8.9 is rounded up commonly for brevity and marketing’s sake).

Miller’s rapid barrage of scoring began when Miller came down the floor and knocked down a three. The Pacers guard then snatched Anthony Mason’s attempted inbounds pass so that he could go back out on the perimeter and knock down another triple to tie the game. The final two points came after John Starks missed two free throws and Patrick Ewing missed an offensive put back that led to Miller getting the board and getting fouled so that he could drain two free throws that were enough to give Indiana the victory in Game 1.

After that start to the series, it’s unsurprising that the Pacers went on to win the series and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals where they were knocked out by the Magic. However, the eight points in nine seconds is one of the most incredible things to ever happen in an NBA game and that it was in front of his rival in Spike Lee only made it more memorable.
