Philadelphia 76ers: 1983 NBA Playoffs

There’s a chance that the recent unexpected passing of Moses Malone gives this moment a bit of an emotional charge, but that doesn’t make it any less great. That moment is the 1983 NBA Playoffs as Moses Malone and the Philadelphia 76ers were wrecking the league. It was his quote and then the team’s performance that truly made it great.

Before the start of the 1983 postseason, Malone gave his prediction for his Sixers team by giving one of the best quotes in NBA history saying, “fo, fo, fo.” Of course, Malone meant that his Sixers team was going to sweep every team they faced in the postseason on their way to a championship.

What makes this moment so great for the 76ers and in the history of the league and not the predecessor to Brandon Jennings’ infamous “Bucks in six” prediction is that Malone wasn’t far off from what actually happened. Philadelphia lost just one game in that postseason, a defeat at the hands of the Bucks in the second round. This even led to the Sixers getting the inside of their championship rings transcribed with “fo, fi, fo” to play off of Malone’s prediction. That’s just and incredible touch to something that was already amazing.

The 76ers team led by Malone and Julius Erving were just too dominant to be stopped at that time in the league and they knew it. They knew they were going to cruise to a title, so Moses Malone said they were going to do just that. It’s that warranted blend of confidence and performance to back it up that makes this moment so amazing and the greatest moment in Sixers history.
