San Antonio Spurs: Tim Duncan in Game 6 of 2003 Finals

The San Antonio Spurs have so many moments over the past two decades and even further back that could possibly make the cut as being the greatest moment in the franchise’s history. You could honestly just put down the entire Gregg Popovich era in San Antonio as one moment and that would honestly be sufficient because he’s built a dynasty with this team.

However, it’s a moment from near the beginning of the Spurs dynasty that I’m selecting as the greatest moment in Spurs history. Specifically, Tim Duncan’s performance in the closeout Game 6 of the 2003 NBA Finals is one of the most incredible moments in NBA postseason and San Antonio history.

Up against a Nets team that was on fire up to the Finals and led by Jason Kidd, the Spurs had the answers for them in the first five games of the series. That led to Game 6 in San Antonio and apparently Duncan didn’t want to go on the road again because he went absolutely berserk.

In that game six, Duncan put up just the most ridiculous stat-line ever particularly for a Finals game. He ended the night with 21 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists, and eight blocks on the night. That’s a 20-20 game, a triple-double, and almost a quadruple-double all on the same night and in the biggest playoff series of the year. Oh yeah, that performance by Duncan also led the way to victory and subsequently the 2003 NBA Championship.

That level of performance in such a critical moment deserves all of the recognition it can get. What’s crazy is that it doesn’t often come up in the conversation of incredible postseason performances, or at least not right away. That only makes the moment even more perfect for the Spurs.
