The Miami Hurricanes athletic director Blake James received “Butch or Bust” cupcakes from an anonymous fan to hopefully persuade The U in brining back Butch Davis as head coach.

The University of Miami football program is in search of a new head coach for their team after athletic director Blake James fired Al Golden after Week 8’s blowout loss at home to Clemson, 58-0. That was the worst loss in school history for The U. The program is a far cry from what it once was and fans are clamoring for former head coach Butch Davis to take over the program. One fan sent James “Bust or Bust” cupcakes.

Davis did help build the second wave of The U, as the Hurricanes head coach from 1995 to 2000. Butch left Coral Gables for the Cleveland Browns in 2001, the year before the Miami Hurricanes won a National Championship over the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Though Davis did get the Browns to the AFC Playoffs in 2002, he was out of a job by December 2004. He then went on to coach the North Carolina Tar Heels from 2007 to 2010. His tenure with UNC was not without self-imposed sanctions, as the Tar Heels vacated their 16 wins from 2009 to 2010.

Now 15 years after Butch Davis last coached the Miami Hurricanes, the faithful supporters of The U want him to return and bring this once proud program out of the catacombs of the ACC Coastal. Davis has stated that he wants James to consider him for the vacant head coaching gig, but Davis hasn’t coached in half a decade and would have to recruit players to Miami that were toddlers the last time Davis was all about The U.

Entering Week 9 of the 2015 NCAA Season, the open Miami Hurricanes head coaching gig is the second most appealing position available behind the USC Trojans. While The U has tradition and plays in an underwhelming ACC Coastal Division, the Hurricanes are the third most recognizable university in Florida behind both Florida and Florida State. The ‘Canes also have to play their home games miles away from campus in Miami Gardens at Sun Life Stadium, a facility they share with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.

Expect Blake James to take his time in selecting the new leader of the Miami Hurricanes football program. He may not opt to bring back Davis, who did spur the program for the Cleveland Browns, but at least James will have some delicious cupcakes to enjoy while he thinks about the coaching search. Coconut shavings and chocolate sprinkles have to sweeten the push for Butch Davis’ return, right?
