The San Francisco 49ers will be without running back Carlos Hyde on Sunday against the Rams

The San Francisco 49ers haven’t been lighting the world on fire by any means through their first seven games of the 2015 NFL season, but if they wanted to stay alive by picking up a win over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday afternoon, they were going to need a standout offensive performance. That’s going to be much harder now that running back Carlos Hyde won’t be playing in Week 8.

Hyde, who has been dealing with a foot injury that originally had him listed as a game-time decision, was ruled out for Sunday’s NFC West showdown with the Rams on Friday afternoon, as reported by Peter Schrager of FOX Sports:

Though Hyde hasn’t been dominant by any means, he has been the 49ers leading rusher to this point of the season. Now the onus in the backfield will fall on veteran Reggie Bush, who has been seldom used since an injury of his own earlier in the season.

What’s more likely is that San Francisco will try and rely on Colin Kaepernick this week against St. Louis. Given that Kaepernick has struggled when he’s been up against a quality pass-rush this season and that the Rams have one of the most dominant pass-rushing front-sevens in the NFL, this has the makings of a game that could end very poorly for the Niners now that Hyde is out of action.
