Florida State quarterback Everett Golson will not play against Syracuse on Saturday.

Coming off a heartbreaking defeat, the Florida State Seminoles will be up against it when facing Syracuse. ESPN’s Todd McShay reported early on Saturday morning that the Seminoles will be without starting quarterback Everett Golson. According to McShay, Golson has lingering symptoms from a concussion and thus will not take the field. Sean Maguire will start in his stead.

The absence means that Florida State will be without both its starting quarterback and starting tailback. Heisman hopeful Dalvin Cook is dealing with an ankle injury, and is being held out until, most likely, next week’s Clemson game.

"“Hopefully, he’ll be ready to go [Nov. 7 against No. 3 Clemson]. If he could play this week, he would play. His hamstring feels great, doing really well. Never had a problem with it at all.”"

Typically a pushover, this year’s Orange team is actually halfway decent. They played toughly against LSU earlier in the year, and with the exception of a 45-24 beat down by USF have played competitive ball in every contest.

As for Florida State, Maguire entered the offseason as the team’s projected starter at quarterback. After Golson transferred from Notre Dame to FSU he and Maguire ran neck-and-neck throughout camp until the former was named starter just before the season-opener. This game will likely present a much less difficult challenge than the last time Maguire stepped in for a benched quarterback. Last season he led the Seminoles to a dramatic overtime victory over Clemson while filling in for the suspended Jameis Winston.
