It wasn’t easy, but Ole Miss is still in control of its own destiny in the SEC West after a 27-19 road win over Auburn

The No. 19 Ole Miss Rebels survived a Halloween scare from Auburn in a tough 27-19 win on Saturday afternoon at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Injuries were the story heading into the game for Auburn. Quarterback Sean White was able to start after being a game-time decision but was limited throughout the game, while defensive end Carl Lawson returned to the field for the first time since the Tigers’ opener.

Lawson was able to get some pressure early, but the Rebels were able to take their opening drive down the field for a field goal behind the rushing duo of Jaylon Walton and Akeem Judd. Still, Auburn’s defense looked much improved over recent weeks against the SEC’s best offense and kept the Tigers close for much of the game.

A poor Ole Miss punt midway through the first gave Auburn possession on the Rebels 40 yard line, but it had to settle for a 52-yard field goal from Daniel Carlson. Such missed opportunities would become a story, as the Tigers had to kick four field goals while only finding the end zone once.

The Tigers were finally able to generate the explosive plays that were missing all season, starting with a 47-yard touchdown pass from White to Ricardo Louis to go up 10-3 early in the second. Auburn’s defense continued to harass Chad Kelly with a five-man defensive front and looked very impressive until late in the first half, when Judd scored on a 26-yard run to knot things at 10, aided by a short field following a failed Tigers fourth down attempt.

Kelly began to get receivers Laquon Treadwell and Damor’ea Stringfellow more involved early in the second half, leading Ole Miss on two long drives. Still, those drives only resulted on three points, as Auburn’s defense held on fourth down inside its own five yard line.

With Peyton Barber limited by an injury, Auburn had to turn to Javon Robinson in the second half at running back. Robinson responded by carrying the ball five times for 47 yards on Auburn’s second drive of the third quarter, leading to a field goal to tie the game at 13.

The Rebels then marched down the field near the end of the third and scored on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to Derrick Jones. However, Robinson continued to be effective on the ground and White hit on another big pass to Louis, leading to a 33-yard boot from Carlson.

Turnovers have been a major problem for Ole Miss all season, and Kelly was picked off by Kris Frost on Ole Miss’ next drive. Auburn connected on a huge trick play from Johnson to Tony Stevens on the next snap, leading to yet another field goal in the red zone.

Those missed opportunities became too much for Auburn to overcome. Ole Miss went down the field with little resistance, capping off a long drive with a 21-yard highlight-reel touchdown catch from Treadwell. Auburn threatened once more with just under four minutes remaining, but was stopped on fourth down inside Ole Miss territory as the Rebels hung on for the 27-19 win.

Three Stars

Laquon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss. Took over the game in the second half, finishing with seven catches for 114 yards and a touchdown. Added a key 21-yard pass on a trick play early in the third quarter.

Marquis Haynes, DE, Ole Miss. Ole Miss’ defense wasn’t at its best, but Haynes got constant pressure while recording two sacks.

Cassanova McKinzy, LB, Auburn. Was excellent in both pass rush and run coverage, helping the Auburn defense to its best performance of the season.
