Upsets are hard to predict, but here are five college football games that should have the favored teams a bit concerned.

November is undoubtedly the best part of the college football season. Throughout college football history November has served as the backdrop for some of the sport’s most monumental upsets. There have been Hail Mary passes and disastrous blown tackles and championship dreams dashed in the matter of seconds. It’s by far the most exciting time of the year for college football fans, as well as being almost unbearably stressful for fans of teams with championship aspirations.

Recovering from an upset loss at the start of the season is one thing. Just look at the Alabama Crimson Tide, who have bounced back from their trouncing at the hands of Ole Miss to put themselves in playoff contention. (Cue “SEC bias!” cries of outrage here.) But an upset in November? An upset in November is a whole different beast. Those losses are the sorts of losses that ruin perfect seasons, the losses that send teams tumbling down the polls. Those are the sorts of losses that stick with fans for years and years.

There is no perfect crystal ball for predicting potential upsets – if so, the people in Vegas would be out of a job – but here is a look at five games that could cause some trouble for the favored teams.

It’s worth noting that a lot can happen between now and when these games kickoff. Injuries, suspensions, coaching turmoil – you name it. The games selected for upset potential today could wind up being blowouts, or could wind up not being upsets at all (for example, if the currently favored team’s starting quarterback goes down with an injury during practice). But that sort of rationality is not the point. It’s more fun to project, to predict, and that’s exactly what we’ll do here.

Are these stone-cold guarantees? Of course not. But these are five games, presented in no particular order, that are worth circling on the calendar.

Let the chaos begin.
