No. 4 Alabama pulled away in the second half to take down No. 2 LSU

The matchup between the second-ranked LSU Tigers and the fourth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday night from Bryant-Denny Stadium looked like it was going to be a sluggish affair for much of the first half. Derrick Henry looked dominant for the Crimson Tide early on while the Alabama defense stopped Leonard Fournette in his tracks to help put Bama up 10-0 early on. That was short-lived as Brandon Harris got LSU rolling a bit with a 40-yard touchdown to Travin Dural. The Tigers then tied it up before the Tide took a three-point lead off of a booming 55-yard field goal just before halftime. It seemed like a tight affair would be the story, but then the second half happened.

Alabama’s defense, their front seven in particular, all but completely shut down anything and everything that the Tigers were trying to do offensively. And while the LSU defense was getting after Jake Coker often in the passing game, Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake continued to run all over the Tigers on the offensive side of the ball, including two third quarter scores for Henry. With Fournette still not able to get loose and Brandon Harris struggling to even just complete a pass, the 30-10 lead that the Tide got out to early in the fourth quarter was too much to overcome. Even with the Tigers and Fournette saving a bit of face with a score in the final period, this was an emphatic victory for the Crimson Tide that shakes up the College Football Playoff and SEC West stage.

Three stars

Derrick Henry looked like a superstar in this game for the Crimson Tide, continually coming up huge for Alabama. The back was a workhorse and finished with 38 carries for 210 yards and three touchdowns on the night.

Jake Coker didn’t have an overwhelming game in terms of stats as he threw for only 184 yards on the night. However, the Alabama quarterback was big for the Tide in not getting jump at LSU’s pressure and maintaining his composure.

Dillon Lee shined for a Crimson Tide defense that shined as a whole. The senior linebacker registered an interception and a sack on the night, as well as contributing to the dominance of the Alabama front seven.
