The New York Giants defense is set to get a welcomed boost, as Jason Pierre-Paul will be starting against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul will make his return today against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, making his first appearance since suffering a serious hand injury in a Fourth of July fireworks accident. The Giants won’t be wasting any time, and the plan is not only for JPP to play, but to actually start the game.

It’s an amazing comeback for the 26-year-old after many doubted he would ever be able to return to the football field. And the Giants desperately need the boost. New York owns the No. 32 defense, and has allowed 315 yards through the air per game.

More worrying for New York has been the lack of sacks, and Pierre-Paul certainly has a history of taking down the quarterback. Through five years in the NFL, he’s posted 42 sacks.

It’s uncertain how effective Pierre-Paul will be today, and he will be monitored closely by the Giants. But it’s an incredible comeback, and one that could give his team the boost it truly needed defensively. The unit allowed an NFL-tying seven touchdowns to Drew Brees last week.

The New York Giants take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium at 4:05 p.m. EST.
