Kristaps Porzingis was so close to hitting a game-winning buzzer-beater

The New York Knicks fell behind the Charlotte Hornets by two points thanks to a Cody Zeller layup with less than a second left in the game. The Knicks would have the chance to get a shot up and that onus ultimately fell on the electrifying rookie, Kristaps Porzingis.

With 0.5 seconds left on the clock, Porzingis broke up the inbounds play that was drawn up and flashed to the top of the key. He got the ball and threw up an absolutely beautiful jumper. It was nothing but nylon for the Latvian rookie:

The referees ruled the shot good on the floor and Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte looked stunned and heartbroken at what the Knicks and Porzingis had just done to them. However, the officials went to the replay monitor to make sure he got the shot off in time. It was incredibly close, but the refs ruled that the shot was no good and still Porzingis’ hand as time expired.

Talk about a rollercoaster of emotions for both the Hornets and the Knicks on one play.

Though the shot didn’t count, the legend of Porzingis is only growing. He broke up a designed play to break free and take the last shot to try and win the game. It may have been a fraction to late, but he hit it with ice in his veins as well. It feels like we might be watching the birth of a new era in New York.
