The Cubs, Astros, and Orioles are showing early interest in free agent outfielder Alex Gordon. Gordon would make a ton of sense for all three teams.

Alex Gordon figures to be one of the first outfielders to sign this MLB off-season. The Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros have all expressed a ton of early interest in the outfielder. He’d make a ton of sense for those three teams as each team is seeking to improve the top of their lineup.

Alex Gordon would perhaps make the most sense for the Orioles. The Orioles have two huge holes in their outfield and they desperately need a lead-off hitter. The Orioles were forced to have star third baseman Manny Machado bat in the lead-off spot for a majority of the season. Machado is a great hitter, but he should be batting second or third in the lineup because he does so much damage at the plate.

Gordon would help the Orioles replace Nick Markakis and give them an ideal lead-off hitter. Gordon is superb defensively so he’d fit in with manager Buck Showalter’s defense-first philosophy. Gordon would likely see his numbers improve in the notably hitter-friendly Orioles Park At Camden Yards.

Gordon would make sense for the Astros for some of the same reasons he would make sense for the Orioles. The Astros could stand to improve at the lead-off position and could certainly use a patient hitter who can consistently get on base. While the Astros don’t need a corner outfielder as badly as the Orioles do, signing Alex Gordon would allow the Astros to solve their corner outfield spots for the next few years. They already have George Springer. Adding Gordon would give the Astros some flexibility regarding which prospects they can trade.

If Gordon wants to win another World Series, the Cubs might be his most ideal destination of the three teams. The Cubs haven’t won since 1908, but they are pushing hard to win one in the next few years. The Cubs need a lead-off hitter and Gordon is one of the best available.

Gordon would be an intriguing fit for the Cubs because his presence could mean the end of Jorge Soler or Kyle Schwarber. The Cubs could easily trade either of the two and not have a shortage of suitors.

Whoever signs Alex Gordon is getting a productive outfielder who can make the top of any lineup look better.
