Last night the New Orleans Pelicans snatched their first win of the season with a 120-105 victory over the visiting Dallas Mavericks. However with one step forward the Pelicans may have taken two steps back, as star forward and franchise cornerstone Anthony Davis picked up a hip contusion/strain in the second quarter. Multiple outlets are reporting that Davis may not play against the Hawks tonight in Atlanta.
Davis was enjoying one of his most dominant quarters of the season posting 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The all-star forward led the pelicans to an 18-point lead over the Mavericks by halftime but did not return in the second half. Finishing with 17 points, 7 rebounds, a block and a steal in only one half of action proves just how valuable Davis is to this young pelicans team. (all stats via ESPN)
After the game Davis’ X-rays reportedly came back negative, which is a good sign for his long term health. Head coach Alvin Gentry spoke about his star man’s injury saying:
"“I don’t know. I just know he had some problems. I don’t know if it’s a groin or hamstring but we’ll find out.”"
With Davis out of the game the Pelicans worked hard as a team to maintain their lead against Dallas with five players besides the injured Davis putting up double digit points. Ryan Anderson came off the bench and led the way with 25 points and 11 rebounds. The Pelicans will look to replicate this concerted effort against the Hawks tonight if Davis is unable to suit up.
