Oklahoma came into Waco and all but ended Baylor’s College Football Playoff dreams
The Baylor Bears struck first against the Oklahoma Sooners inside McLane Stadium on Saturday night and many people expected more of what we’ve seen all season from the Bears in terms of their unstoppable offense. However, that wasn’t the case. Offense came at a premium for Jarrett Stidham, Corey Coleman, and the rest of the Baylor offense while Baker Mayfield, Samaje Perine and the Sooners offense battled as well. That ultimately led to a Mayfield rushing touchdown to give Oklahoma the 20-13 lead going into halftime. Baylor scored quickly to open the third quarter, but then the Sooners scored two quick touchdowns for a commanding 14-point lead.
However, this Baylor team is far too dangerous to be counted out and they started fighting back. Stidham found LaQuan McGowan for a touchdown pass to the fan-favorite and then led another drive after an OU field goal that ended in a touchdown pass to Jay Lee. It seemed like the Bears were about to fight back with the score at 37-34. That’s when Baker Mayfield came to play. Mayfield drove the Sooners down the field and got them deep into Baylor territory. On third-and-goal, however, the Sooners needed a touchdown to be sure to go up by two scores. Mayfield made a fantastic play to buy time and then throw a bullet touchdown pass to go up 44-34.
The Bears would still have a chance at the win, but those chances quickly went out the window as Stidham threw an interception on the first play of the ensuing drive. That gave Oklahoma the ball and the ability to essentially run out the clock after a few key first downs. Mayfield simply took a knee after making just a few more plays for good measure, giving the Sooners the huge win and ending Baylor’s perfect season.
Three stars
Baker Mayfield played with more fire and passion than anyone on the field and it paid dividends. He finished with 76 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown to go with his 270 yards passing and three touchdowns through the air, including the marvelous game-clinching throw.
Samaje Perine was a monster in Oklahoma’s rushing attack, taking 27 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns against the Bears.
Sterling Shepard was Baker Mayfield’s security blanket all night and also his best big-play receiver. Shepard finished the night with 14 receptions for 177 yards and two touchdowns.

Odds
Baylor came into the game as two-point favorites, failing to cover in the loss. As you would expect, though, the two teams combined to hit the over.
Next Week
Oklahoma doesn’t get a break to end the season as they’ll be in Norman next weekend to take on the TCU Horned Frogs.
Baylor will have their work cut out for them next week as well as they’ll be on the road in Stillwater to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
