Johnny Manziel got off to the worst start possible for the Browns against the Steelers

The Cleveland Browns, due to an injury to Josh McCown, were forced to start second-year quarterback and world-renowned enigma Johnny Manziel on Sunday in their Week 10 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. While Browns fans may not have been excited about that prospect, it served as a big opportunity for Manziel to prove himself as a viable option for the future. He didn’t get off to a good start in doing that in Pittsburgh.

After the Browns defense forced Landry Jones and the Steelers offense off of the field, Manziel lined up to take the snap and get the offense going. He dropped back to pass, but that’s the only offensive move he ever got to make. As he cocked his arm back to throw, he lost control of the ball and fumbled it off the helmet of one of his linemen before it was recovered by the Steelers:

When people talk about the downside of Johnny Football, this would be a part of the reel that those people use as evidence. To play quarterback at any level, you’re going to need to hang onto the football.

Luckily for the Browns, the turnover from Manziel didn’t wind up being too costly. The Steelers started with terrific field position, but only managed a field goal on the ensuing drive. Even only allowing three points, Manziel’s first offensive play resulting in an inexcusable fumble isn’t a great way for the second-year quarterback to prove himself or inspire confidence.
