Cotto vs Canelo result: Canelo Alvarez defeats Miguel Cotto via unanimous decision
By Jack Crosby
A look at the result on Saturday night from the showdown between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez
Saturday night we got the fight that everyone has been waiting for in the Middleweight division, as Canelo Alvarez took on Miguel Cotto with the Lineal and RING Middleweight crowns up for grabs. Of course, the WBC title was supposed to be in the mix here, but that was stripped from Cotto this past week as he reportedly did not pay the sanctioning fee.
Cotto came into this one on Saturday night as one of the biggest names of this generation in the sport of boxing and a 40-4 overall record, with 33 of those wins coming by knockout. As a Middleweight, there are few fighters in the business that hit harder than Cotto, and he was trying to show that once again on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Well, his opponent Saturday night just so happened to be Canelo Alvarez, a 25-year-old Mexican sensation who probably hits just as hard and sports a record of 45-1-1 with 32 knockouts, if not harder. So you can see why there were so many people looking forward to these two battling in the center of the ring finally.
Here’s a look at how this mega-fight played out.
Round 1
The two come out to the center of the ring and Canelo gets off the first jab with the left. Cotto comes back with a few of his own and lands a small left jab on the chin of Canelo. Alvarez is doing a good job getting away from the Cotto tries and coming back with the jabs in the middle of the ring. With about a minute left in the round, the two trade left hooks and Canelo gets one in on the body. Lot of body work here in the opening round. With 10 seconds in the round, Canelo lands two stiff shots. Otherwise, even round for the most part.
FanSided Score: 10-9, Cotto
Round 2
Cotto immediately lands a right to the head of Canelo after the bell sounds and they hit the center. So far through the first two rounds, Cotto is the one throwing significantly more than Canelo as he just keeps taking the shots. With a minute left in the round, Canelo took a shot at the right uppercut but missed. Canelo is starting to put in a little more work now on Cotto.
FanSided Score: 10-9, Canelo
Round 3
Canelo starts coming with even more shots in this round and even lands one of the lefts early. With Canelo throwing more since the first round, Cotto starts coming back with more jabs, landing a few. With 20 seconds left in this round, Canelo landed a hard right hook to the head that landed nicely. These two are getting ready to throw down now.
FanSided Score: 10-9, Canelo
Round 4
Cotto landed a nice right hand after the round started, a punch that he needed after the last two rounds. The champ is starting to move a lot more around the ring here, making Canelo start to chase him. With a minute left in the round, the two trade hard body shots and you can literally just see the battle coming. At the 10 second sound, Cotto lands a short left and that was a tough round to figure out, really. But that straight right hand at the beginning of the round puts Canelo over the top.
FanSided Score: 10-9, Canelo
Round 5
Cotto lands a nice left hook to the body, but Canelo immediately answers with a right hook of his own. That was followed up with a hard left hand and Cotto fought back with a flurry of his own. Whatever Cotto is landing on Canelo, Alvarez is just fighting through with his size advantage here. With 10 seconds in this one, Canelo connects with a hard right that moves Cotto.
FanSided Score: Canelo, 10-9
Round 6
Right off the bat you can see that Canelo is looking to set up the uppercut, as he goes to the body and immediately tries to come up with the right. A short time later, he comes at Cotto with a combo that reels him a bit. Cotto is starting to circle more and more around the ring here in Round 6, trying to prevent Canelo from coming forward. Another round here where the punches were about equal. Cotto gets this one.
FanSided Score: Cotto, 10-9
Round 7
Cotto comes out really aggressive here to start this round. Canelo starts to throw a few shots, but Cotto starts to back him up as he becomes more aggressive, but Canelo just won’t let it happen. With under a minute left in the round, Cotto came at him again but Canelo was able to land another small uppercut. Cotto is landing some of these punches, but they’re not affecting Canelo whatsoever.
FanSided Score: 10-9, Canelo
Round 8
Canelo IMMEDIATELY lands another left uppercut right out of the gate. Then, we got the action that we were looking for as these two started trading the blows, bringing the crowd to their feet. Canelo was the one winning the exchanges, mainly because he could absorb the punishment. Cotto did, however, get in three nice punches with about a minute left. Cotto eventually starts to work his way around the ring again, making Canelo work. That was by far the most exciting round of the fight. Canelo wins on the power punches.
FanSided Score: 10-9, Canelo
Round 9
They come out to the center of the ring and start trading again, with Cotto landing some shots to the body of Canelo. They exchange some nice right hands before they need to be separated. With a minute left in the round, Canelo got Cotto up against the ropes and got hurt just a bit. Canelo landed another left hook as well. He’s starting to pull away.
FanSided Score: 10-9, Canelo
Round 10
The start of this round was slower than the recent ones, as Cotto is now trying to figure out how he can get back in this one. Canelo isn’t throwing as much either. With under a minute left, Canelo gets pushed down and we have a break. As time was winding down in the round, Cotto got in a nice right hook shot to the body. As the round came to a close, Cotto lands a right but Canelo comes back with a three-punch combo.
FanSided Score: 10-9, Cotto
Round 11
Cotto landed a really nice right to start this one off to the head. Right after that, he starts dancing around, figuring out his next move, even landing a combo. After more dancing, with a minute left in the bout, Canelo landed a very stiff shot to the head of Cotto, which was returned with a right hook. Not much excitement to end this one. Off to the 12th and final round it is.
FanSided Score: 10-9, Cotto
Round 12
They touch gloves in the center of the ring and we’re off and running. They start trading punches in the center, as they both look for the KO. Canelo is getting the better of the exchange early on and Cotto tries to fight back. Cotto now has a cut over his left eye, which is not a good look here in this round. With time running down, Canelo really starts to hurt Cotto against the ropes, but he escapes. The round comes to a close and we go to the cards.
FanSided Score: 10-9, Canelo
