Power ranking NBA head coaches: 2015-16 season
By John Buhler
29. Byron Scott, Los Angeles Lakers
Byron Scott’s Los Angeles Lakers are an awful 2-10 to start their 2015-16 campaign. Scott once led the New Jersey Nets to back-to-back Eastern Conference Championships in the early 2000s, but that seems like a lifetime ago for the Lakers’ head coach.
The Lakers are probably not going to win 30 games this season, but Scott is coaching in a manner that is counter-intuitive to the team’s construction. He’s opting to stick with veteran players over playing the younger guys on his team.
The Kobe Bryant Era at the Staples Center is slowly, but surely on its way out, so why isn’t Byron Scott at least playing DeAngelo Russell, Julius Randle, Larry Nance Jr. and Jordan Clarkson in crunch time, just to see what he has to work with?
If Byron Scott continues to coach in this manner, he may not only find himself out of a job, but also out of opportunities to head coach in the NBA again. With his job certainly on the line, maybe playing young players more will help the Lakers’ poor team offensive (101.4) and defensive ratings (108.2) and get the Lakers some much-needed wins in the process?
