ESPN Sports Science took an in-depth look at why Tom Brady is as good as he is

Approaching 40-years of age with over 15 years on the same football team with no signs of ever leaving the New England Patriots, Tom Brady’s career has left some fans of the game scratching their head at just what makes him so great.

Earlier Saturday, ESPN’s Sports Science gave us an in-depth explanation at how Tom Brady “continues to dominate the league.” In particular, attention was paid to his pinpoint accuracy and his quarterback sneak attempts. Take a look at the video for yourself below!

First, ESPN gets into the idea of speed-accuracy trade-off which states that the faster your arm (and rest of your body moves) to throw a ball, the less accurate your aim becomes. Brady’s throws have been measured and pinpointed and on average  Brady’s passes take about .39 seconds to reach its target, no matter where on the field he is. Additionally, Brady’s passes are 10 MPH faster than the average professional NFL quarterback coming in at 61 MPH.

The stats don’t end there as when they measured the angular velocity of Brady’s arm throws at a distance of 20 yards away, it was found that his speed was on par with MLB professional pitchers.

Finally, Sports Science gave us a blow-by-blow explanation at what exactly makes his rushing stats so amazing. Within less than a second, Tom Brady already has the ball snapped into his hand, has already initiated the mechanics to drive his body forward and placed himself directly between two of his defenders giving him enough forward momentum to pass the line of scrimmage and gain a few yards. As a matter of fact, with similar third and fourth down rushing attempts as Marshawn Lynch, Lynch has a conversion rate of 60 percent. Tom Brady boasts a 91.9 percent conversion rate.

When you get down to it, the numbers don’t lie. Although Sports Science takes a very general view of a players stats and shapes it into a video that’s more or less is made to impress its viewers, it still doesn’t take away at the seemingly unhuman like abilities that makes Tom Brady as formidable as he is at his age.
