Andy Murray leads Great Britain to their first Davis Cup championship in 79 years

Coming into the final day of the 2015 Davis Cup Final, Great Britain had not won a Davis Cup title since the days of superstar Fred Perry in 1936. That’s a trophy drought of almost 80 years, and a countless number of British tennis fans and players had lived and died without seeing their country win a title. There were numerous amount of heartbreaks since then, most notably the 1978 Championship when they fell victim to the greatness of Americans John McEnroe and Stan Smith.

But finally, Great Britain had its own superstar – a tall, lanky Scotsman by the name of Andrew Barron Murray (Andy Murray, for short), and he almost single handedly led the British team to a 2-1 lead against an upstart Belgium side in Ghent. He was also the man who had the opportunity to finally lead his nation over the hump, with only David Goffin, the #1 ranked Belgian tennis player in his way.

Day 1 saw youngster Kyle Edmund lead Great Britain into battle and took a shocking two set to nil lead against Goffin, before completely running out of steam and ultimately losing the first tie 3-6 1-6 6-2 6-1 6-0. Nevertheless, Team GB showed they were here to play when Murray slaughtered #108 ranked Ruben Bemelmans 6-3 6-2 7-5.

As in the case of most Davis Cup matches, Day 2 saw the make-or-break doubles match when Andy and older brother Jamie Murray took on surprise pairing David Goffin and Steve Darcis. It was a nervy but exciting affair for both sides, but it was ultimately the Murray brothers who prevailed with a four set victory that ended up: 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-2.

And fittingly, like it was throughout the entire tournament, it was Andy Murray who sealed the historic victory for the Brits with a comfortable 6-3 7-5 6-3 win. Check out the final point of the match below:

An absolutely unbelievable finish to an enticing finale. It has been an emotional season for Murray with many frustrations and disappointments but is there a better way to end the season than to take a 79-year old monkey off the back of your own nation?

No, I didn’t think so either…
