Steven Stamkos apologizes for Twitter error
Steven Stamkos claims he made a mistake while on Twitter
In the National Hockey League, there’s no bigger name currently in the game than Tampa Bay Lightning‘s Steven Stamkos. On Wednesday Stamkos, originally from Toronto, caused a stir on Twitter north of the border.
During an intermission between the New Jersey Devils and the Toronto Maple Leafs on a TSN broadcast, Canada’s sports network, there was a question that created discussion by the hockey analysts. The question that was about what the Toronto Maple Leafs should do with upcoming free agent Stamkos possibly being available this summer? Do they trade for him before the February 29 NHL Trade Deadline? Or should they wait until July 1, 2016 and sign him as a free agent.
Twitter exploded on Wednesday afternoon, when TSN tweeted about the question from the night before. All-star centre Stamkos caused a ruckus when he ‘liked’ the tweet posted by TSN. Shortly after realizing he ‘liked’ the tweet by the Canadian sports network, he pulled his ‘like’. Stamkos indicated he didn’t realize he hit the ‘like’ button.
Stamkos is telling people he made a mistake and did not mean to approve of the tweet. Whether you believe Stamkos or not, you have to think that GM Steve Yzerman and the management team cannot be happy with his mistake on Twitter. It is well known that Yzerman and Stamkos are at odds on a potential contract before he becomes a free agent this summer.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are beginning a ‘pain’ filled rebuild as promised by President Brendan Shanahan, GM Lou Lamoriello and head coach Mike Babcock. Stamkos is 25 and still in his prime and would be a welcome addition to Toronto and being the face of the original six franchise. Some fans in Toronto will want a trade, but the smarter move for the future of the team might be to wait until July 1, 2016.
We will have to wait and see how the next three months go, prior to the trade deadline, but Stamkos has made things awfully interesting given the activity on Twitter on Wednesday.
