It seems that there’s a chance we could see the Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez bout that we’re waiting for after all.
From the moment that Canelo Alvarez defeated Miguel Cotto a few weeks ago for the lineal middleweight and WBC championship, everyone’s eyes turned to the potential mega-fight we could have on our hands: Canelo facing off against GGG himself, Gennady Golovkin. Everyone wants to see these two, young power punchers slug it out in the middle of the ring to see who the best fighter in the division really is.
Now, should Canelo not get into the ring with Golovkin, then he would be stripped of the WBC middleweight title that he won from Cotto. With Alvarez favoring to fight at catchweight and Golovkin fighting at the true middleweight limit of 160-pounds, there is a problem here, making these the most watched negotiations in quite some time in the world of boxing.
However, there might be some good news here. Apparently the negotiations between Golden Boy Promotions and K2, the promoters of Canelo and GGG respectively, are making some good progress. They’re making good enough progress in fact that they were granted an extension on the negotiations by the WBC on Saturday.
“That bout carries enormous implications and is of great importance for boxing, both in terms of history and for the future of the sport,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said via ESPN.com. “Many details must be addressed for a super fight of that magnitude to actually occur. The boxers’ respective promoters, Golden Boy Promotions and K2 Promotions, have been communicating in good faith to finalize the details of the negotiations for the contest to come to fruition.
“Recognizing that their discussions have been ongoing, the WBC has given the parties the flexibility to continue to work amicably to finalize terms, with the ultimate goal being that the two champions meet in the ring.”
Look, the fact of the matter is that there is still a long way to go here and a lot that has to be agreed upon. But, with how unlikely it seemed that these two would fight one another in 2016, any news such as this should be taken as a good sign.
For the sake of the sport of boxing, these two sides will do whatever it takes to make this happen.
The original deadline for the negotiations was to be this Friday.
