History says Warriors will win title after Bucks end winning streak

The Warriors suffered their first loss of the year to the Bucks, but history says that they’ll not win the title

The Golden State Warriors suffered their first loss of the 2015-16 season on Saturday night at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks played one of their best games of the season while the Warriors showed the fatigue that you’d expect from a team on a road trip that played in a double-overtime game the night before.

At 24-1, though, the Warriors are still the clear favorites to win the title this year. Moreover, history is in their favor. As pointed out on NBA Reddit during the Warriors-Bucks game, every time that the Bucks have ended a winning streak of 12 games or more in their history, the team whose streak that they ended went onto win the title.

This started back in 1972 when the Bucks ended the Los Angeles Lakers’ record 33-game winning streak and the Lakers went onto win the championship. It happened again in 1973 when Milwaukee ended the Boston Celtics’ 12-game winning streak before Boston went onto win the title.

It happened again in 1983 with the Philadelphia 76ers, in 2007 with the San Antonio Spurs, and in 2010 with the Dallas Mavericks, all three teams also going to win the championship in that season.

So the Warriors may not be going 82-0 and they may not have set the NBA record for a winning streak. But history says they are going to repeat as champs, which seems like a good enough consolation prize.
