Kansas City Chiefs 7-round mock draft
3rd Round – #86 overall
Maurice Canady hits all the measurables the Chiefs like to see in cornerbacks. Canady has been playing major football in the ACC and is over six feet tall, making him a nice feet for what the Chiefs like to do on the outside in defensive coordinator Bob Sutton’s scheme. Kansas City loves to play plenty of press-man on the outside, something Canady could certainly do.
Kansas City already has rookie Marcus Peters on the outside along with Sean Smith, who has blossomed int one of the best corners in football. The problem is the Chiefs have a ton of free agents that are hitting the market in March, and Smith is in line to cash in with some serious coin. Should Smith leave, Kansas City needs to find his replacement, which could be either Canady or another veteran off the free-agent market.
The Chiefs have invested in their secondary during the Dorsey years. Kansas City has twice drafted a cornerback in the third round, taking Phillip Gaines in the 2013 class before landing Steven Nelson out of Oregon State last spring. Nelson is yet to contribute while Gaines has been excellent in the slot, although he tore his ACL in Week 3 of this season.
