There’s a phrase in today’s lexicon that has taken hold largely thanks to the deluge of information on the Internet: Fear of Missing oOt (FOMO). The basic principle behind FOMO is that there is so much going on – whether in the real world or in the constructed realities of social media – that people have developed an irrational fear that life is passing them by. The speed with which information travels has led society to be constantly plugged in, as well as perpetually self-evaluating, so as not to be left out of the next big meme.

And while FOMO sounds like a condition that would strictly afflict teens, tweens and millennials tethered to their wireless devices, it goes far deeper. Take, for the purpose of this post, sports teams. Specifically: coaching changes.

As the world has grown faster, and as feedback has come more readily (especially that of the unsolicited variety), teams have hired and fired at a more rapid pace. Fans want immediate results. In response, owners and general managers shift pieces to appear compliant to their customers, supposedly keeping fan bases happy so they can continue raising ticket prices. And coaches, well, they’re now shuffled in and out of leadership positions almost as they sub players in and out of a game.

Hope springs eternal following any bad season, and the next Lombardi, Shula or Walsh is out there waiting in the wings. Teams grow tired of not making it over the hump. Shared visions give way to personal vendettas. And, in some cases, general incompetency is the name of the game.

Over the past decade there have been a handful of mind-scratching coaching turnovers in the NFL. Here are the five most egregious.
