In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Steven Gerrard, admits that he is gearing up for what will probably be his final season playing the beautiful game.
Steven Gerrard was one of a plethora of international stars to make the move to Major League Soccer in 2015. Although the Los Angeles Galaxy failed to live up to expectations in 2015, being eliminated from the first round of the playoffs, the former English international proved he still has something left to offer. He featured in a respectable 14 league matches, scoring two goals and providing three assists since joining the Galaxy in the middle of the campaign.
However, in an interview with British outlet, The Telegraph, Gerrard admitted that he is probably going to hang up his boots when his current contract expires at the end of the year.
"“I’m not 100 per cent sure but I think it will probably be my last year as a player,” Gerrard said."
The 35-year-old has had quite the storied career and has nearly done it all. While he was never able to win the Premier League with Liverpool, he did lead his club to a UEFA Champions League triumph in 2005 and two FA Cups.
Gerrard doesn’t plan to completely disappear though, claiming he plans to get into coaching once he retires.
"“I have regrets I didn’t start my coaching badges at 21-22. All that time wasted in hotels as an England player when I’ve been bored and was watching ‘The Office’ and ‘The Sopranos’. I wish I’d done my CBA (coaching) licence then so I’d be doing my pro-licence now. I know many players get to the end of their careers, get handed a thick C licence pack and say, ‘Nah, I’m not doing that.’ That’s 70/80 caps and 600 career appearances and he is just going nah. He could have had it done.“I’ve dreams and aspirations of going into coaching and management but at the moment I’m nowhere near ready for management. When you start your coaching badges you realise pretty sharp it’s different. You’re in control of 25 men with different egos.”"
Before he calls it quits, Gerrard will have another season to add even more trophies to his shelf when the Galaxy kickoff the 2016 campaign at home against D.C. United on March 6th. They will then travel to Colorado to take on the Rapids on March 12th.
