NFL Rumors: Philadelphia Eagles interested in Sean Payton if available
By Jason Evans
Could the next Philadelphia Eagles head coach be Sean Payton?
The NFL head coaching carousel is off and running with the Cleveland Browns and the Philadelphia Eagles looking for head coaches already before we hit “Black Monday.” Where might the Eagles look for a head coach? Could they be looking at someone who isn’t even available quite yet?
Paul Domotowich of Philly.com is reporting that the Eagles will have interest in New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton if he were to become available.
According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Saints, were Payton to become available, would be looking for a second-round pick in return for their head coach. An interesting tidbit considering the coach isn’t even available yet.
The tough part for Eagles, if that tag is correct, is that the Eagles don’t have their second round pick in the upcoming draft. That was sent to the St. Louis Rams as a part of the Nick Foles/Sam Bradford trade.
The Eagles have already interviewed running back coach Duce Staley for the head coaching position. This satisfies the Rooney Rule, so if the Eagles are able to strike a deal for Payton they can make a move quicker than other teams who may have interest in the coach.
Part of the Eagles thinking in firing Chip Kelly before the last game of the season is they want to make a move quickly and get a jump on the other teams pursuing coaches. Can the Eagles land him? We shall see.
