Tom Coughlin has said he will coach again if given the “right opportunity” after being sacked by the New York Giants.

Tom Coughlin is the biggest name so far he will be without a job come 2016. Well, that’s what many of us thought. With Coughlin one year short of 70, and the oldest coach in pro football (before he was fired), many believed that he would not take up another role in the NFL. The 12 year Giants’ coach has enjoyed significant success throughout his years in the NFL, especially in New York, and will be a popular choice among fans of other teams, now that he has declared his intention to stay in the league.

Coughlin’s future in pro football is utterly depedent upon the role offered. There are many franchises looking for head coaches right now, and some huge organizations with great potential. If Coughlin was offered such a role, even at 69, it may well be too tempting to turn down. How many times have we seen successful coaches prolong their career beyond all expectations?

Once with the Giants, Coughlin reached the playoffs on four consecutive years from 2005-2008, beating New England in 2007 to spoil its undefeated season, and then again in 2011. The game remains one of the biggest upsets in pro football history. However, three straight losing seasons have sunk Coughlin, along with the prevailing idea that the team needs a new voice to lead the way.

It was a tough decision for the Giants to take. Coughlin is a popular figure among fans and players, but he has now gone. Giants’ fans may have to get used to seeing Coughlin on another sideline. It couldn’t be the Eagles, could it?
